This is not strictly relevant to the item above, but I just heard a prominent industrialist use the word “innivative” with the accent on the second i. This pronunciation (note: not pronounciation!) is becoming increasingly common in the UK and is obviously wrong. Maybe you can include this example in an item on similar wrong words. Regards

Nice write up! I’m new to this blog am impressed with your writing and knowledge of a wide array of topics.

I am huge beliver in cross training. If one muscle gets stonrger and stronger from running, while the other msucles groups remain the same, then use injuries will happen. My cross training consists of running plus at least two other excercies each week.

Joey, this is a good list of common sense and practicial tips. I really enjoyed reading this! I would like to add some comments:
Your #3 talks about lower heels shoes. You are correct that traditional (space ship) shoes have high heels and your Adidas have lower heels, but there are also COMPLETLEY flat shoes these days like the Vibram 5-Fingers. Any runner should NOT go from a high heel to a 100% flat overnight. If this is their goal then they need a good transition shoe like the Adidas you mentioned.

#15 (new): Log your progress. I log each run with distance, time to run, time of day, weather, what ate and drank recently, and how I felt. This info gives me a good reference to see if food correleates to my better runs.

#16 (new): Drop weight. Imagine running with a lead vest. You wouldn’t do that would you? This is similar to the stress that overweight people put on their joints daily. Every pound you can drop is one less pound of stress you are adding to your joints with each step. This is kind of chicken/egg though. As you run more the weight will come off and as you said you will lose the deisre to eat twinkies and pop-tarts.

WOW! This is exactly what I was looking for to support an argument. I thought I was alone in the universe wanting an open source OSX. I am a huge Apple devotee but I know that OSX is not the future of Apple. It’s impossible to know how much money Apple does or doesn’t make on the MAC but I would guess it is barely enough to pay for itself. It seems that recent buyers are really iphone developers who are required to code on a mac.

vikram: Effect is the result of something. Affect is how something is going to impact on you (or someone else). Examples: The closure of the mill is going to affect a lot of families in the town, and the effect could be a steady decline in the town’s economic stability.

Great list Joey. Incorrect tense drives me nuts (mainly in books by American authors I’ve noticed) – example “I sung” instead of “I sang”; ditto for rung/rang.I agree with you on the blessed/blest – that’s how I’ve always used the words. Can anyone help me with the correct term for a completely inappropriately used word? In a book I have just finished the author had a character get “tediously” out of a car and strut down the street. Later in the book another character walked “haphazardly” across the car park to her car. How randomly or carelessly did she actually walk? Did she finally reach her car by sheer chance? While my daughter and I got a good laugh out of these mistakes, I do wonder what editors do these days?

Bad news. My house was broken into and my TouchPad was stolen. Unfortuately, unlike other systems, the TouchPad cannot be tracked via GPS. This is really a shame because the 3.0.4 update was applied and the tablet had become very responsive and useful!! 3.0.4 even added a camera app. Sad day for me.

Wow! I turned on the camera and I only see half my face. From the middle of my nose upwards. If I hold the touchpad completely vertical, like against a wall, I see half my face. In order to see my entire face, I have to lean the touchpad towards me at about 35-40 degrees. Well, what’s the point? Obviously can’t use the touchstone charger. Is there software to adjust the view? Webcams, seecurity cameras and even videophones (ViaTV) dating back to 1995 have software to aim the lens.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Steven, thanks for the note. When I wrote this 1.5 years ago, I had to register to download my driver pack. I asked my sales rep about this and he said “that’s just the way it works.” They may have changed this requirement since then, but that was the case.

Nice write up about the Dell. I would like to clarify a couple of things however. One does not need to register in order to update or load any software with Panasonic. Simply go to the Toughbook site and pick your model and OS. The Toughbook line that Dell compares themselves to are rated for Mil Spec 810-G, which is a step above the F of Dell. You made a very good observation in that the XFR line is “rebuilt” to rugged specs. The biggest difference is that the Toughbook is made from scratch to be rugged. If you were to ever start taking one apart you will see a huge difference in how they are made. Great write up!

Joey, interesting topic. I’m a recovering Apple guy myself and have carried a Droid for a year. Let’s just say I am not impressed. My iphone was not perfect and I bought a lot of hype, but this Droid…. Where do I start? It requires constant reboots, was confusing to learn, and is frankly ugly ugly ugly. The HTC Sense software helps with the ugliness, but in-turn slows it down. Everyone I talk to to or read about that has a Windows Phone gushes about it. I wouldn’t say that you are gushing, but you point out some of the drawbacks which are not huge. (Try getting the Apple fanboy camp to point out deficiencies in their devices!!) The only drawback that concerns me is the lack of customization. Do you know if future versions will allow for more customization?

Jon, I’m referring to Blackberry Protect. Individuals and even some small companies don’t use the BES/BAS infrastructure. To use Protect on BB 5, you must install the app. I would assume on versions 6&7 it is part of the OS. Speaking of BB, my belief is they could temporarily stop the corporate bleeding if they adopted ActiveSync in lieu of forcing companies to use the BES.

Most of your issues listed here are why I chose the BlackBerry Playbook instead, although I do wish I’d been able to get one during the fire sale.
I AM a little confused on what you mean on #17 by ” I think every platform (even BlackBerry FINALLY) has this type of service.” BlackBerry has had the BES capability as well as 3rd party apps for the BIS users (RoBlock and FindIT jump to mind) since before the first IPhone was released in 2007.

Cecil, thanks for the note. I agree that my list is not a litany of showstoppers. That’s why I called it a list of “annoyances.” I also agree that the lack of marketing has been pathetic. Aside from the initial burst of TV spots, there has been very little in terms of product placements or other spots. Perhaps this will change with Mango and Nokia.

I don’t know… Most of these seem like nitpicks to me. With the exception of 9 (app gaps), 11 (universal search) and 12 (a cohesive cloud strategy), do any of those really make WP7.5 less competitive than other platforms?

Will any of these really deter the majority of the public from adopting it? Sure, there’ll be a group out there that’ll consider the lack of Citrix client to be a dealbreaker. But I’ll wager anything you want that those people are a very small minority.

So the question is, why is Windows Phone not selling? My guess is the fault lies mostly with the poor (or lack of?) marketing.

I have been considering the Dell Venue Pro that is a Windows Phone with a phyiscal keyboard that slides out from the bottom. Have you used one of these?
